HCSO says undercover sweep led to 50 arrests of unlicensed contractors
Hillsborough County residents hiring home-repair help should check licenses, insurance and written contracts after HCSO said a countywide operation led to 50 arrests of unlicensed contractors.

What HCSO said happened
Hillsborough County residents who hire someone to repair a roof, wiring or a foundation are getting a fresh warning from the sheriff’s office. HCSO said Thursday that its undercover Operation Bad Builder led to 50 arrests of unlicensed contractors in Hillsborough County after an investigation that ran from June 1 through Oct. 2. Detectives said they used online and social media ads, resident tips and undercover meetings to identify suspects.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said the concern is not just paperwork. In the release, he said workers without a license and training can put families in danger when they touch wiring, roofs or a home’s foundation.
What residents should do before hiring
The sheriff’s office says residents should verify a contractor’s license, ask for proof of insurance, be cautious of ads on social media and online marketplaces, get everything in writing and never pay the full amount up front.
Anyone who believes they may have been victimized by an unlicensed contractor should contact HCSO detectives at 813-247-8200.
