Tampa's Hispanic Heritage Celebration Moves Downtown to the Convention Center Today

Tampa's 38th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration moves to a bigger stage today. The Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Committee holds the free, public event from 11 a.m. to noon at the Tampa Convention Center, 333 S. Franklin St., after years at the smaller Tampa Theatre. No tickets, no registration. Just show up.

Mayor Jane Castor will present a proclamation marking National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through Oct. 15. Alberto Delgado, founder of Festival de Bomba y Plena en Tampa, is the guest speaker. The program includes music, dance and cultural performances, a mix organizers have leaned on for nearly four decades to turn a City Hall proclamation into an actual party.

The move to the convention center says something about who this event is for now. More than 26% of Tampa's population, over 105,000 residents, identifies as Hispanic or Latino, making it the city's second-largest racial or ethnic group. A theater lobby only holds so many people.

A committee with a longer résumé than one lunch hour

The hour-long ceremony is the public face of work the Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Council does year-round. The council raises scholarship money for local students and runs a poster contest with Hillsborough County Public Schools, giving kids a reason to think about heritage beyond a single September assembly. Today's celebration is the visible piece of that calendar, the one where the mayor shows up and the drums start.

Getting there is straightforward if you already know downtown. The convention center sits on the waterfront near the Tampa Riverwalk, with parking in the attached garage and nearby downtown lots. Because the celebration lands on a weekday morning during business hours, anyone planning to attend on a lunch break should budget extra time for parking closer to a packed schedule of fall convention center events.

What's next

National Hispanic Heritage Month continues through Oct. 15, and Tampa's celebration is one stop in a season of events across the region marking it. The city has not announced whether the convention center will be the celebration's permanent home going forward, but a larger venue after 37 years at Tampa Theatre suggests organizers are planning for a crowd that keeps outgrowing whatever room they book.
